Numerology is the metaphysical science of numbers. Mathematics represents our physical universe, its structure and dimensions but numerology represents the less tangible aspects of existence and teaches us about a hidden world that is contained within simple numbers.
Numerology was formulated by the Greek scholar and mystic, Pythagoras. Pythagoras founded his own university and provided education in philosophy, music, mathematics, culture and metaphysics. It was during this time that he formulated the science of numerology and all subsequent numerology is based on his work.
Numerology enables us to explore the hidden meanings contained within our name and our birth date and gives us insights into personalities and relationships. It looks at the events in our lives in terms of cycles.
There are many books on the subject, starting with the basics and then moving on to more complex, in-depth exploration. There is much to learn about your Destiny number, Success Year number, the numbers in your name and your Personality number.
The main number for numerology is your Life Path number, also known as your Destiny number. All you need to do is to know your date of birth, add all the numbers together, and then reduce them down to a single digit. There is an exception to this rule if you are born in the 11th month, or born on the 11th or the 22nd day of any month, or if the total of your year of birth equals 11 or 22. Here is an example:
1910 = 1 + 9 + 1 + 0 = 11
or
1975 = 1 + 9 + 7 + 5 = 22
11 and 22 are Master numbers and are not reduced.
However, I am now going to demonstrate a very simple method to calculate your Personal Year number, but when calculating your Personal Year number, the Master numbers 11 and 22 are reduced to the single digits 2 and 4 respectively.
Here is and example of how to calculate the year by reducing it to a single digit:
2012 = 2 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 5
2000 = 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 2 = 2
1999 = 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 =28 = 10 = 1
1998 = 1 + 9 + 9 + 8 = 27 = 9
1997 = 1 + 9 + 9 + 7 = 35 = 8
1996 = 1 + 9 + 9 + 6 = 25 = 7

To calculate your personal year number for 2012, if you were born on 3 June, here is an example of the method:
3 (day) + 6 (month) +5 (i.e. 2012 = 5) = a personal year number of 5.
Your Personal Year number starts on your birthday on the year in question and ends the day before your birthday of the following year i.e. for 2012, the personal year for someone born on 3 June starts on 3 June 2012 and ends on 2 June 2013.
For a number 5 personal year, you can expect a year of experimentation – delving into the unknown and trying different things. This will be a year when you recognise limitations and restrictions and when you will look for ways to free yourself from them by stretching your horizons, looking for adventure and finding new opportunities. This is a year for personal growth and development.
Numerologists look at our lives in terms of cycles and every year in these cycles has a trait, character and vibration from the number one through to the number nine. Look back nine years, say from 2012 to 2003, and then from 2003 to 1994 and then to 1985. You will notice that all these years have the same number vibration of 5 and you will be fascinated when you notice the similarities in your circumstances.
